Hurricane Helene on Lake Sinclair: Are You Prepared?

As Hurricane Helene approaches, residents and boaters around Lake Sinclair must take proactive steps to ensure their safety and protect their property. With the potential for severe weather, high winds, and rising water levels, preparation is key. Here’s how to secure your boat, dock, and surrounding area to minimize damage and ensure your safety and the health of our beautiful lake.

  1. Secure Your Boat

Remove All Gear: Start by taking out any equipment, gear, or personal items from your boat. This includes life jackets, fishing tackle boxes, coolers, and any other loose items that could become projectiles in high winds.

Secure or Remove Your Boat: If possible, take your boat out of the water and store it in a safe location. If that’s not feasible, ensure it is secured to the dock with strong, quality lines. Use fenders to protect the boat from the dock and ensure it has enough slack to rise and fall with the water levels.

Drain and Secure Fuel: Make sure the fuel tanks are not overly full, as expanding fuel can cause problems. Consider draining excess fuel or securing it safely.

  1. Clear Your Dock Remove Loose Items: Walk along your dock and clear away all loose items. This includes:
  • Life jackets
  • Floating devices
  • Trash cans
  • Tackle boxes
  • Any decorative items

These items can easily become hazards during high winds or flooding, potentially causing damage to your property or others, as well as debris in the lake.

Secure Dock Furniture: If you have furniture on your dock, either bring it inside or secure it as much as possible. Tie-down larger items to prevent them from being tossed around.

  1. Monitor Weather Updates Stay informed about the storm’s progress. Use reliable sources such as the National Weather Service or local news stations to get updates on hurricane paths and potential impacts. Internet could possibly go down; do you have a radio with batteries available if internet service and  power go down? Make sure you have emergency candles, and battery-powered lights and keep cell phones charged at all times until the power goes out to ensure a full battery.
  2. Consider Flooding Risks Hurricanes can bring significant rainfall, causing lake levels to rise rapidly. Take these precautions:
  • Elevate Electrical Equipment: If you have any electrical equipment on the dock, raise it above expected flood levels to prevent water damage.
  • Have a Flood Plan: Know your evacuation routes and have a plan for where you’ll go in case you need to leave quickly.
  1. Communicate with Neighbors Check in with your neighbors to ensure they’re also prepared. This creates a supportive community where everyone can help one another in times of need.
  2. Final Checklist Before the storm arrives, go through this final checklist:
  • All boat gear removed
  • Boat secured or removed from water
  • Dock cleared of all loose items
  • Dock furniture secured
  • Electrical equipment elevated
  • Communication plan in place

Conclusion

By taking these steps to prepare for a hurricane on Lake Sinclair, you can protect your property and ensure your safety. Remember, preparation is not just about securing physical items; it’s about being informed and ready to act. Stay safe, and let’s hope for a reduced outcome for the current forecast for the Lake Country area.

Stay Safe friends and neighbors!
